Leclerc continues to set the pace in Mexico

NEWS STORY
30/10/2026

Ahead of today's second practice, the air temperature is 25 degrees C, while the track temperature is 38 degrees.

As a reminder, in terms of updates, McLaren has new Cooling Louvres. To cope with the specific power unit cooling challenges in Mexico, the cooling louvres have been extended forwards and reshaped.

Red Bull has a new Engine Cover and Sidepod. To recover cooling mass flow through the radiators, the exit area has been increased by extending the area of the existing louvres and optional louvres
further outboard, while the revised sidepod and floor to sidepod split line is aimed at improving the flow characteristics below the inlet to the radiator duct gaining local load whilst maintaining stability.

Ferrari has a new Engine Cover and Cooling Louvres. Specific to the requirements of the circuit, these new bodywork exit and additional louvre panels are extending the top end of the engine cooling capacity, at the expense of car efficiency.

Racing Bulls have a new Coke/Engine Cover and Cooling Louvres. The main cooling exit at the rear of the bodywork has been enlarged, to increase the available engine cooling to suit the high demands of this circuit, while to further extend the cooling range in extreme conditions, an additional forward louvre panel is available which allows for increased airflow through the radiators.

The Audi has a new Rear Corner featuring an updated rear brake duct deflector. The revised rear brake duct deflector geometry represents a local rear corner aerodynamic load increase, improving the overall aerodynamic performance of the car.

The Alpine has a reprofiled exhaust tailpipe vane whose configuration has been trimmed to suit the track's unique ambient and aerodynamic requirements.

There were ten reserve drivers on duty this morning so this afternoon Verstappen, Russell, Norris, Bortoleto, Lawson, Bottas, Albon, Stroll, Colapinto and Ocon will get their first taste of the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Leclerc set the pace earlier - as was the case last weekend, ahead of Antonelli, Vesti, Hamilton and Iwasa, while Alonso was seventh, ahead of Piastri.

After taking on new engine components, Bottas has a 50-place grid penalty.

Worth noting that there were 26 track limits violations, with Turn 1 being the most problematic.

Haas have changed the engine on Bearman's car following the scare at the end of FP1. However, as it was for an old unit there is no penalty.

Green light, Gasly leads the way, followed by Colapinto, Lawson, Ocon and Russell.

As more drivers emerge it is a mixture of mediums and hards. However, Albon and Verstappen are on softs.

"I have no power steering," says Ocon. "It is super heavy."

Ocon briefly stops on track (Turn 3) but is able to get going again.

Colapinto posts a benchmark 23.521, but Lawson responds with a 22.213 and Lindblad a 20.275.

Hulkenberg goes second and Verstappen third, the Dutchman 0.199s off the pace.

A 19.584 puts Hadjar at the top of the timesheets as Antonelli goes second with a 20.020.

A vicious snap for Leclerc but he holds it all together.

Quickest in the final two sectors, Hamilton goes top with an 18.741.

Piastri (hard) goes second while his teammate goes third on the mediums, both are over 0.4s off Hamilton's pace.

Russell goes fifth with a 19.551 as Lawson wonders if he is invisible after being impeded.

Perez is shown a black and white for an unspecified pitlane infringement.

Piastri runs wide in Turn 1, as does his teammate moments later.

Leclerc goes top with an 18.257, both Ferraris are on the yellow-banded rubber.

Alonso goes tenth with a 19.622.

There is debris on the racing line at Turn 16.

In fact it appears to come from Lawson's car after the kiwi was involved in a scrap with Verstappen, the two side-by-side as they battled through a number of corners.

The session is red-flagged for the removal of the debris as Stroll complains that his car is broken.

The Lawson/Verstappen incident has been noted, and probably not just by the stewards for the Dutchman appeared pretty peeved by it all.

"He literally just drove into me," insists Lawson as in the pits it is clear that Verstappen is missing a significant piece of his floor.

The session resumes, and Gasly leads the way, followed by Ocon, Antonelli, Albon and Lindblad.

The Ferrari pair are now on softs, while Antonelli is on mediums.

The Italian splits the Ferraris with an 18.559, however having gone quickest in the opening two sectors, Leclerc makes a mistake in the Stadium section. Hamilton improves but remains third, however moments later he drops to fourth when Norris goes top with an 18.161 on the red-banded rubber.

Alonso goes fifth, 0.697s off the pace!!!

A massive lock-up in Turn 1 for Leclerc. To add to his woes the Monegasque is shown the black and white for driving erratically.

Quickest in S2, Hamilton improves to third with an 18.512.

"We need to stop the car," Hamilton is told, the Briton having warned that he had no power in Turn 13.

He stops the car between Turns 3 and 4 as the VSC is deployed. He climbs from the Ferrari.

The VSC is withdrawn and the session resumes.

Gasly goes fifth with an 18.557, as Hadjar goes quickest in S1, the Frenchman subsequently crossing the line at 18.237 to go third.

A 17.966 puts Leclerc back on top, while Norris goes second with a 17.930.

Russell goes fifth and Lindblad sixth, while a 19.049 puts Ocon fourteenth.

Lawson goes seventh with an 18.455 and Bearman twelfth.

Russell improves to third, just 0.106s off Leclerc's pace. Interestingly, that was his second flyer on that set of tyres.

Onboard shows Piastri really struggling to control his car which appears determined to break away from him.

Lawson and Verstappen have both been summoned by the stewards.

The Dutchman, despite his floor damage, has improved to fifth, 0.311s off the pace.

"Don't do that to me," says Ocon after being told he was being switched to mediums. "I wanted softs," he insists. As he heads out he is sporting the red-banded rubber.

Bortoleto has yet to post a time having only completed two laps, however he is now back on track.

Russell has the best pace on the softs and Leclerc on the mediums.

"Oh my God, I had the biggest bottoming of all time," says Hadjar, "you'll have to check the car."

The session ends. Leclerc is quickest, ahead of Norris, Russell, Antonelli, Verstappen, Hadjar, Lindblad, Gasly, Lawson and Piastri.

Hamilton is eleventh, ahead of Alonso, Ocon, Bearman, Hulkenberg, Colapinto, Sainz, Perez, Albon, Stroll, Bottas and Bortoleto.

So, mixed emotions for Ferrari, what with Hamilton's issue, while Norris and Mercedes must be feeling positive.

A strong performance from Verstappen, considering the damage to his car, while Lindblad and Gasly were both impressive, not forgetting Alonso who finished twelfth.

Asked about that incident, Verstappen, says it was "not very smart" of Lawson, "especially when you're fighting for your seat". Ouch!
